On Saturday, March 9th, I attended the joint Town Hall event held at the Skyland Fire Station by Brian Turner (D, NC House 116) and Vijay Kapoor (Asheville City Council).
Turner spoke with residents about the legislative year, including the SAFE Act, which targets sex offenders and helps protect victims. Turner also pushed for a commission to regulate gerrymandering - the manipulation of voter districts - as well as his support for the restoration of the Earned Income Tax Credit (which benefits low-income families) and his support for the Equal Rights Amendment.
Kapoor spoke about the pressures brought about by development and the ways that the Council is working to make housing more affordable for residents in the City of Asheville.
The event was well-attended and unique from other town halls that take place elsewhere because it highlighted the variety of ways that city and state government can work together to solve problems.
